Duafe

Duafe is my favorite adinkra symbol. It represents femininity, beauty. And honestly, I just love how it looks depicted on everything. So this was my take on recreating this image. Big sculptures are a favorite of mine. They give me room to create a lot of detail and honestly I just love the aesthetic of large pieces with exaggerated features that pull you in and demand attention. However, I am also learning how to scale down and work with smaller images as well. Smaller images have really taught me how to work on my detail to create the look I have in mind.

The debulking process is always nerve wrecking to me, because if you don’t dismantle it the right way, it doesn’t look the same when you put it back together. I’m getting better at this process, learned the hard way, but what other way is there. I had a few pieces topple or look so off when I put it back together that I just decided to scrap them and start over. It’s how you learn. This piece was big, so I had to take off the head and the most of the face to remove the excess clay. I took it apart pretty accurately though, which made it come out the way I intended in the end. Larger pieces are my favorite because they allow me the space to exaggerate features or add as much detail as I want it to have. I definitely want to do more of these. Everything has the possibility of being a series. 🙂
